Lori Lightfoot, Chicago’s first Black girl and brazenly homosexual mayor, on Tuesday turned the primary chief of the large Midwestern metropolis in 40 years to not win re-election, US media reported.
Lightfoot, criticized by rivals for the rising crime charges within the metropolis, conceded the shock defeat, telling supporters she was “rooting and praying for our subsequent mayor to ship for the folks of town for years to return.”
Paul Vallas, a former chief govt of Chicago public colleges, will now face Brandon Johnson, a Prepare dinner County commissioner and former instructor, in a second spherical on April 4, in accordance with the Chicago Tribune.
Vallas is backed by the native police union, whereas Johnson has the help of the Chicago academics’ union.
Lightfoot’s defeat was seen as a shock within the nation’s third largest metropolis, which has for many years returned mayors to energy.
