Indian-Origin MIT Professor Hari Balakrishnan Awarded Marconi Prize

Hari Balakrishnan, an Indian-origin MIT Professor, has obtained the distinguished Marconi Prize for his elementary discoveries in wired and wi-fi networking, cell sensing, and distributed programs.

Balakrishnan, a Fujitsu Professor of Laptop Science and Synthetic Intelligence within the Division of Electrical Engineering and Laptop Science on the Massachusetts Institute of Know-how (MIT), was named the winner of the award on February 22, a press launch by The Marconi Society stated.

The Marconi Prize is awarded yearly by The Marconi Society to innovators who’ve considerably contributed to rising digital inclusivity via superior data and communications expertise.

“By focusing his analysis on the appliance of expertise to resolve giant societal issues, Balakrishnan’s work has made tens of millions of individuals safer and has made the Web and wi-fi communications extra environment friendly and strong,” the press launch stated.

In line with the press launch, discoveries by Balakrishnan ceaselessly set the stage for main shifts within the scientific and technological trajectory of networking programs.

“Hari’s distinctive contributions have formed the course of analysis and discovery in a number of fields, saved lives, and enabled customers to have higher experiences with network-based providers,” Vint Cerf, Chair of the Marconi Society, stated.

“His concentrate on scientific excellence that creates optimistic impression at scale, alongside together with his humanitarian contributions, makes him an ideal selection for the Marconi Prize,” Cerf added.

“The breadth, depth, and innovation of Hari’s contributions to expertise are fairly outstanding,” Chair of the Marconi Prize Choice Committee, Andrea Goldsmith, stated.

“His transformational impression on expertise, profitable translation of his analysis concepts into widespread apply and his humanitarian actions are exemplary of the contributions the Marconi Prize seeks to recognise,” Goldsmith added.

Balakrishnan obtained his B.Tech diploma from IIT Madras and his PhD from the College of California at Berkeley.

He will likely be honoured on the Marconi Society’s annual awards Gala on October 27, 2023, in Washington, DC.
